The Kalamata Creative Documentary Center kicks off its pre-festival retrospective tribute to director Stavros Kaplanidis (1945–2019) ahead of the 12th Peloponnisos International Documentary Festival, presenting the acclaimed biographical documentary "Stavros Tornes – The Poor Hunter of the South".
"The Poor Hunter of the South" was the title of the project visionary filmmaker Stavros Tornes never had the chance to shoot before his passing in 1988. Stavros Kaplanidis touches upon Tornes' images, listens to his whispers, delves into the memories of close friends, and follows his path to sketch the portrait of a creator who produced cinema with virtually nothing, remaining stubbornly true to his vision until the very end.
Enriched with rare footage from Tornes' ground-breaking directing works (Coatti, Balamos, Karkalou, A Heron for Germany) and his magnetic on-screen presence as an actor (in films by Francesco Rosi, Paolo & Vittorio Taviani, Roberto Rossellini, Agnès Varda, Dimos Theos, and Kostas Sfikas), this documentary captures an uncompromising nomad of art, resistance, and personal freedom.
