The Kalamata Mountain Run is a mountain running event that aims to highlight Kalamata’s unique relationship with the mountains and the sea, offering participants a unique sporting experience in a natural environment of exceptional beauty.
The event takes place on Mount Kalathi (1,340 m.), which dominates Kalamata and is connected to Mount Taygetos. The routes run from sea level to mountain ridges, combining coastal sections, traditional settlements, historic cobblestone streets and mountain paths with panoramic views of the Messinian Gulf.
With the motto “From Sea to Mountain”, the Kalamata Mountain Run offers runners the rare experience of starting next to the sea and racing within a few kilometers in an authentic mountainous environment, enjoying images that combine the sea, the olive grove, the urban fabric of Kalamata and the peaks of Taygetos.

1. Kalathi Trail 25K, a demanding mountain route for experienced runners.

The Kalathi Trail is the main race of the Kalamata Mountain Run, offering a demanding and unforgettable mountain running experience on the slopes of Mount Kalathi, one of the most characteristic mountains overlooking Kalamata and the Messinian Gulf.
The Kalathi Trail has been assessed and certified by the International Trail Running Association (ITRA), with a Finisher Level of 260, offering athletes official result registration and recognition in the international trail running assessment system (ITRA’s website link: https://itra.run/Races/RaceCourse?raceYearId=120476)
Starting at sea level, on the beach of Kalamata, runners embark on a demanding 25-kilometer journey that takes them up to 1,215 meters in altitude, connecting the sea with the mountain through an impressive change of landscapes. The route passes through the settlements of Kato and Ano Verga, follows historical paths and mountain passes and reaches the ridges of Mount Kalathi, offering unique views of the Messinian Gulf, Kalamata and the imposing peaks of Taygetos.
With 1,474 meters of positive elevation gain, the race is demanding and technical in several places, aimed at well-trained runners with previous experience in mountain running races. The constant alternations between uphill paths, rocky passes, forest roads and fast descents create a route that tests the endurance but at the same time rewards every participant.
The Kalathi Trail perfectly expresses the philosophy of the Kalamata Mountain Run – From Sea to Mountain, offering the rare experience of starting by the sea and reaching the mountain peaks in the same race.
2. Verga Race 9K, a shorter but equally impressive route, ideal for those who wish to discover the world of mountain running.

The “Verga Race” is a dynamic route of 9 kilometers that combines sea, mountain and a unique view of the Messinian Gulf. Starting from the beach of Kalamata, the runners follow a demanding but accessible route that climbs towards the traditional settlement of Kato Verga, offering impressive views of the city, the sea and the first peaks of Taygetos.
With a total elevation gain of approximately 470 meters, the route moves on a combination of tarmac, cobblestones and trails, offering an authentic mountain running experience without requiring specialist experience. It is aimed at both road runners who want to experience trail running and experienced athletes who are looking for a fast and exciting race with intense changes of scenery.
The “Verga Race” is the ideal opportunity to live the unique experience of the Kalamata Mountain Run, from the sea to the mountain, in a natural environment that combines the beauty of Messinia with the wild charm of Taygetos.
