One of the landmark films of Greek neorealism opens Doc Cafe's screening program for September. In the poor Athenian neighborhood of Dourgouti in the 1950s, Kosmas, a truck driver struggling to pay off his vehicle, gets pulled into an illegal cigarette-smuggling scheme in search of quick money. When he tries to break free from the underworld, he finds himself facing a gang that means business. But he doesn't stand alone: the whole neighborhood, poor but proud, unites to shield him from the teeth of the "magic" — yet deceiving — city.
