Documentary Screening: The Pickers
Description :
Τhe Kalamata Creative Documentary Center presents the eye-opening documentary "The Pickers" by German filmmaker Elke Sasse (WDR / ARTE co-production) – a powerful investigation into the true human price behind cheap produce on European supermarket shelves.
We want cheap fruit and veg all year round. The pickers deliver, but they pay the price for us.
The film journeys across European fields to expose the systemic exploitation of migrant day laborers: from the "sea of plastic" greenhouses in Huelva, Spain, and blueberry fields in Portugal, to makeshift settlements in Italy and olive groves in the Kalamata region. The film features stories of workers like Seydou from Mali working without contracts and Pakistani harvest workers in Messinia.
Elke Sasse is an award-winning German filmmaker whose work focuses on human stories across the globe (from garlic farmers in China to former forced laborers in Eastern Europe).
