Description :
The theatrical company “Syn Ena – Michalis Toumpouros,” as part of its tribute to contemporary Greek playwrights, already had a triumphant premiere on Saturday, November 8, for its first autumn–winter production of the 2025–26 season.
“The Ceremony” is Pavlos Matesis’s first play.
A sparkling dark comedy, it deals with the tragicomic situations that unfold during a funeral, where propriety, nouveau-riche attitudes, and the hypocrisy of relatives become the stage upon which social, political, and economic issues play out. The exaggerated characters — superficial and shallow — follow a standardized protocol of good manners, which, in Greek reality even today, conceals an obsession with appearances. These petty-bourgeois figures, suffocating within family and social relationships, use the funeral merely as a pretext, an occasion to flaunt their financial status.
Through this play, Pavlos Matesis skillfully and sharply satirizes, in his own distinctive style, the behaviors of the newly rich, who appear fully aligned with the prevailing establishment. His work breathes a timeless quality, as even in our era class differences continue to serve the economically and politically powerful.
“The Ceremony” is a small masterpiece, rightly distinguished by the jury of the National Theatre Competition, which awarded it the National Theatre Prize in 1966, the year it was first presented.

Theatre Group “Syn Ena – Michalis Toumpouros”, founded in 2008 and based in Kalamata, is an amateur theatre company with an active presence mainly in the region of Messinia. It has a rich artistic activity, participating in numerous local cultural events, and has already produced eighteen (18) successful theatrical productions to date.
