The exaggerated characters — superficial and shallow — follow a standardized protocol of good manners, which, in Greek reality even today, conceals an obsession with appearances. These petty-bourgeois figures, suffocating within family and social relationships, use the funeral merely as a pretext, an occasion to flaunt their financial status.

Through this play, Pavlos Matesis skillfully and sharply satirizes, in his own distinctive style, the behaviors of the newly rich, who appear fully aligned with the prevailing establishment. His work breathes a timeless quality, as even in our era class differences continue to serve the economically and politically powerful.

“The Ceremony” is a small masterpiece, rightly distinguished by the jury of the National Theatre Competition, which awarded it the National Theatre Prize in 1966, the year it was first presented.

Directed by: Kostas Katsoulakis

["post-2814","event","type-event","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
