Description :

Stavros Xarchakos is a Greek composer and conductor. He is considered one of the most important modern Greek composers of art and folk songs. He was born in Athens. He studied at the Athens Conservatory and continued his studies in Paris and at the Juilliard School in New York.

He has written songs for more than 42 records, music for 21 films and 15 television productions. He has also composed music for ancient tragedies, dramas and international ballets. It has been awarded several times in film and music festivals, such as the Thessaloniki Film Festival. In May 1994, he was awarded a Doctor of Fine Arts degree by Adelphi University, New York. At the beginning of 1995 he took over the artistic direction of the “State Orchestra of Hellenic Music” (KOEM). In December 2019, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in the Department of Music Studies of the Philosophy School of the University of Athens. In July 2024, the President of the Greek Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, in a special ceremony at the Presidential Palace, awarded the composer the award of the Senior Brigadier General of the Order of Honor.
