from 25 February 2025 to 13 April 2025 at
Exhibition "Remembering the Future: Uncutting Cords"

Description :
The visual artist Maria Olga Vlachou presents her first exhibition at the "Victoria G. Karelias" Collection of Traditional Greek Costumes in Kalamata from February 25 to April 13, 2025.
Through fourteen large-scale works and a video, Maria Olga translates woven, embroidered and knitted handcrafts lost or hidden in trunks into digital “hand-stitched” representations. Listening to the breaths of women, who in earlier times and different circumstances transformed their experiences into art, she converts each stitch into a pixel and brings the significant past into the hopeful future.
A Stilomantila from Karpathos, a traditional bridal shirt from Menidi Attica, wall embroideries from the Ionian Islands and embroidered patterns of the festive costume from Almyros Magnesia serve as inspiration for Maria Olga Vlachou, as well as love, intimacy, romance in the modern era and communication through emojis. The artist invites the audience to connect with the vibrant and uninterrupted pulse of tradition, highlighting the unbreakable bond that unites the past with the eternal present.
Organizers :
The Victoria G. Karelias Collection of greek traditional costumes was created, initially as a private collection, by the founding member and long-standing president of the Lyceum Club of Greek Women of Kalamata, V. Karelias. The fruit of 50 years of dedicated effort, it was bestowed on the Lyceum, to be henceforth curated by an institution widely recognised for its contribution to the preservation and promotion of Greek tradition. Ever since, as a token of gratitude and based on a unanimous decision of the Administrative Board of the Lyceum, it has born the name of the collector.
The collection comprises a large number of complete outfits, as worn by women and men, from all regions of Greece, a considerable number of gold-embroidered overcoats, excellent pieces of work of the terzides, as well as pieces of jewelry which – much more than being mere decorative accessories – constitute an independent and significant component of the collection in their own right.
