"Climate Change and Gender Equality. A Double Challenge"

The Lyceum Club of Greek Women of Kalamata, on the occasion of the World Day of Action against Climate Change, is organising, on the eve of the celebration, an event with the theme "Climate Change and Gender Equality. A Double Challenge".
Climate change is the greatest challenge of the 21st century, as it affects the environment, the economy and society. Extreme weather conditions, loss of biodiversity, water scarcity, but also poverty, food shortage and forced migration threaten our daily lives. Social inequalities are deepening and women are disproportionately affected; the climate crisis is not gender neutral. In every corner of the planet, in the countryside and in cities, women are excessively affected by its effects. Putting women at the forefront of resilience, innovation and social change is a second major challenge.
The event, which will take place on Wednesday, September 24, 2025 at 6:30 p.m. in the courtyard of the "Victoria G. Karelia" Greek Costume Collection, will be addressed by Dr. Zefi Dimadama, Lecturer in the Department of International and European Studies of Panteion University, former Secretary General for Gender Equality and Human Rights at the Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family and President of the Greek Women's Union – Athens Branch.
Her speech will highlight the disproportionate impacts of climate change on women, their role in sustainable development and its response, and the need to strengthen women's presence in leadership positions, in the development of "green strategies" and in the energy transition. At the same time, it will be discussed whether and in what ways the climate crisis can be turned into an opportunity to strengthen equality and a just social transition.

The Lyceum Club of Greek Women of Kalamata was founded in 1967 and is a pioneer in the instruction of Greek folk dance and song. It is also a publisher of works in traditional and folk themes, as well as a producer of traditional music and song recordings. For the whole of its activity it has repeatedly received awards from various cultural organisations and social institutions.
