CELEBRATION OF INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY 2025 – "TRADITION, ART AND TECHNOLOGY”

Every year, on 18 May, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) organises International Museum Day (IMD), a global event highlighting the transformative role of museums in society. In 2025, IMD will explore “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities”, focusing on how museums can navigate and contribute to a world undergoing profound social, technological, and environmental shifts.
In this context, this year's celebration of International Museum Day at the Victoria Karelias Collection of Traditional Greek Costume will focus on the theme "Tradition, Art and Technology".
More specifically, on Sunday 18/05/25 at 11:30, an interview – discussion with the artist Maria-Olga Vlachou and the dramatist Eri Kyrgia will take place in the yard of the Collection. They will discuss how tradition can be a source of artistic inspiration in the era of modern technology.
The visit to the Collection will be free for the public and with extended opening hours 09:00 – 17:00.

The Victoria G. Karelias Collection of greek traditional costumes was created, initially as a private collection, by the founding member and long-standing president of the Lyceum Club of Greek Women of Kalamata, V. Karelias. The fruit of 50 years of dedicated effort, it was bestowed on the Lyceum, to be henceforth curated by an institution widely recognised for its contribution to the preservation and promotion of Greek tradition. Ever since, as a token of gratitude and based on a unanimous decision of the Administrative Board of the Lyceum, it has born the name of the collector.
The collection comprises a large number of complete outfits, as worn by women and men, from all regions of Greece, a considerable number of gold-embroidered overcoats, excellent pieces of work of the terzides, as well as pieces of jewelry which – much more than being mere decorative accessories – constitute an independent and significant component of the collection in their own right.
